Welcome to "Chavchavadze Family”
 05/11/2008

The new website "Chavchavadze Family” is a result of cooperation between the National

Parliamentary Library of Georgia and the Smithsonian Institutional Libraries. Creators of the website used information from various sources, including private archives of the Georgian nobility who emigrated to the west after invasion of the Soviets. During the last two years many important documents (photographs, letters, etc.) were returned to Georgia and are now kept in the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia.

The website contains information about Georgia and the Caucasus, the history of the Chavchavadze dynasty, the episode concerning Imam Shamil, and many more. On the example of one family, the visitors will get acquainted with the everyday life of Georgians in exile. The website is enriched with photos and maps.

In their work, the creators of the site endeavored to show the Chavchavadze family’s role in introducing Georgians to the Western culture, to show their efforts to develop tight economic, political and cultural relationships with the West.

The website will be especially useful for researchers. Every article has the source bibliography part where the sources are specified. The site is interactive and visitors’ feedback is welcome.
